Since the beginning of the year, the Kuzbass region coal companies have increased coal supplies to the domestic market.
According to the results of the first 5 months of 2022, shipments have edged up to 25 mio t (+0.2 mio t y-o-y).
In April 2022, President Vladimir Putin announced that amid sanctions Russia would be able to increase domestic consumption of domestically produced energy resources, including coal.
The growth of supplies to Russian end-users remains limited due to imports of coal from Kazakhstan and gas-fired generation.
An additional constraint on the domestic market in the nearest future will be caused by possible sanctions against local steel industry.
The total coal output in Kuzbass in January-May 2022 reached 92.3 mio t (-5.3 mio t y-o-y).
The negative impact was due to lower production at underground mines that plunged to 31.4 mio t, down 6.4 mio t y-o-y, while open-pit mining climbed to 60.9 mio t, up 1.1 mio t y-o-y.
