Time for action ✊

If the past two years have taught us anything so far, it’s that there’s no room for new fossil fuel projects anywhere. Period.

We have faced one climate disaster after another, and the most vulnerable and marginalized often bear the brunt of them. This is why we have been campaigning for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), one of the biggest financiers of the climate crisis, to stop backing fossil fuel projects everywhere. But our demands have fallen on deaf ears.

Now, it’s time for us to knock harder on ICBC’s door.

On 23 June 2022, ICBC’s annual general meeting (AGM) will take place. We need everyone to help make noise so ICBC will finally listen and stop funding fossil fuel projects.

We have actions planned online and on the streets on the week of ICBC’s AGM. It’s a critical moment for us to intervene as their shareholders will be deciding on ICBC’s business policies and significant investment plans.

It’s not a secret that ICBC still finances coal projects in Asia and Africa. They’re also a major finance adviser for the highly controversial East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.

Communities in Uganda and Tanzania are doing their best to protect their health, land, and livelihoods from oil projects. We don’t want these efforts to be in vain as we are very familiar with the damages that the EACOP project would wreak.

Right now, we’re collecting “selfie” actions to help ramp up our campaign, also to provide an easier way for everyone to take action wherever they are and show solidarity with the communities affected by the ICBC-backed fossil fuel projects worldwide. These will be shown in key locations online and on the ground during the week of ICBC’s AGM to remind them of their pledge to sustainability.

Many financial institutions have already said they won’t finance EACOP. We need ICBC to join them if they are a true partner to communities in Uganda and Tanzania in financing a Just Transition to a clean, renewable energy future.

Take action now or share this with your friends – we need to keep the pressure up to ensure ICBC makes the rapid switch from fossil fuels to renewables.
